Would you like to influence teaching in your degree programme? Or do you have ideas for developing the library? This is your chance to influence matters! We are looking for student representatives for terms of varying lengths. Read more below!
STEERING GOUPRS OF DEGREE PROGRAMMES
Each degree programme at the University of Helsinki has a steering group that supports the director of the degree programme and processes the central issues related to the degree programme’s operation. Two actual and two vice members represent students in each steering group.
The preparation of the curriculum and deciding on the annual teaching schedule are particularly important issues for students to influence: steering groups define the framework for what courses are taught in the schedule, which studies are compulsory for everyone, how much optional studies can be included in degrees, what kind of study material and teaching methods are used on courses and what methods to complete courses each course has. In addition to this, steering groups process issues related to student admissions in the degree programme and the use of teaching and facility resources, for instance.
As a member of the steering group, you will get to influence the teaching provided in the degree programme and make students’ voice heard while also forming useful networks. You can also get credits for acting in the steering group. We are looking for student representatives for the on-going term 1.1.2021-31.12.2022. UNIVERSITY COLLEGIUM
The University Collegium is a multi-member administrative body representing the entire University community. Its members include professors, the University’s other employees and students from all faculties in the University. The duties of the University Collegium include selecting members of the University Board from outside the University community, while this autumn, it will be appointing a new chancellor, for instance. According to the Universities Act, the administrative language of the University of Helsinki is Finnish, which means that the University Collegium operates mainly in Finnish. It is possible to also use other languages in the meetings by agreement. A meeting fee is also paid for participating in the meetings!
As a member of the University Collegium, you will get to influence the future direction of the entire University, make students’ voice heard and create useful networks all at the same time. You can also receive credits for acting in the University Collegium, and a fee is paid for attending the meetings. We are looking for student representatives from these faculties:
- Medicine: 1 debuty
- Pharmacy: 1 debuty
- Veterinary Medicine: 1 debuty
- Svenska social- och kommunalhögskolan: 1 deputy
FACULTY COUNCILS
Faculty councils decide on the operation and development of the entire faculty. On them, you will get to influence major policies including the number of new student places, quality monitoring for research and teaching as well as budgeting in the faculty. A meeting fee and possibly study credits are also given for serving on faculty councils! There are currently open positions on the faculty councils of the following faculties:

UNA EUROPA’S STUDENT BOARD
Una Europa is a European university alliance connecting eight European universities. The mission of Una Europa is to create a European inter-university environment that combines high-quality research, international learning and innovative, critical thinking.
The student members will take part in Una Europa’s working groups, organise Una Europa’s student congress and communicate about Una Europa’s operation and the opportunities it offers to the students of their own University. The Board’s working language is English, which means that fluency in English is a requirement for serving on Una Europa’s Student Board. For this reason, we are requesting that you write your application in English. We are looking for one debuty for term 1.8.2021-31.7.2023.
WORKING GROUP PREPARING UNA EUROPA’S JOINT BACHELOR’S PROGRAMMES
The University of Helsinki is taking part in creating two of the Una Europa alliance’s new joint bachelor’s programmes: one in the field of European studies and one in sustainability science. The working group will plan the contents and structures of the programmes together with the other cooperation universities. This means that you will get to witness the creation of a new degree programme in unique education cooperation! We are looking for one vice member for the term ending on 31 December 2023.
SAMARBETSGRUPPEN FÖR DEN TVÅSPRÅKIGA VERKSAMHETEN PÅ CENTRUMCAMPUS
Bilingual campus group for central campus, Samarbetsgruppen för den tvåspråkiga verksamheten på cetnrumcampus, is a co-operation group for bilingual matters in the central campus. It enhances and coordinates Swedish and bilingual matters and education. The group can handle for example students’ possibilities to perform their exams in Swedish or have education in Swedish.
You can apply for the group if you study in the Faculty of Arts, Law, Educational Sciences or Social Sciences or in The Swedish School of Social Sciences. We are looking for one debuty for the term 1.1.2022-31.12.2023.
TVEX-SAMARBETSGRUPPEN, THE COOPERATION GROUP FOR BILINGUAL DEGREES
Tvex studies refer to bilingual studies that include study units in both Finnish and Swedish. At the University of Helsinki, you can complete tvex studies on the Kumpula, Viikki and City Centre campuses. The duties of the cooperation group, which operates in network form, include supporting cooperation related to bilingual degrees over faculty boundaries and sharing good practices. We are looking for a representative from the Kumpula campus for the cooperation group. You should either currently study in a tvex bachelor’s programme in chemistry or physical sciences or have previously graduated from such a programme. The current term for student representatives ends on 31 December 2024.
THE ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE OF THE DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC FUND OF THE MEILAHTI CAMPUS
The administrative committees are tasked with declaring the grants, prizes, scholarships and any other kinds of financial support awarded out of the money donated into the funds open for applications as well as with making the decisions on awarding them. The committees are campus-specific, which means that the discipline-specific funds of each campus are administered by their own committee.
These positions allow you to learn about fund management, the processing of applications and decision-making processes. Committee’s working language is Finnish. We are looking for one student representative from the faculty of Medicine to the on-going term 1.1.2022-31.12.2023.
LANGUAGE CENTRE’S COMMITTEE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHING
The committee promotes and supports the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching at the Language Centre. It plans and organises the Language Centre’s pedagogical training events and seminars. Discussion topics in the committee include current issues related to teaching and particularly language studies at the Language Centre and the University of Helsinki. The committee operates in Finnish. We are looking for one debuty to the on-going term 1.1.2022-31.12.2023.
THE BOARD OF THE LIBARARY OF UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI
The Helsinki University Library administers and coordinates the University’s library services on four campuses. Its duties include producing high-quality information services for the needs of research, teaching and learning. The Board of the library directs and develops library activities as a whole in a strategic and economic manner. We are looking for one vice member for the Board for its current term, 1 April 2022–31 March 2024.
MEILAHTI CAMPUS LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI
Apply for the advisory board of your campus library to influence the services of your own library! All four of the University’s campus libraries have their own advisory board. The boards are tasked with acting as a cooperation forum for the library’s users and participating in issues such as the strategic development of library services and the planning of collection acquisitions. We are looking for three actual members to the on-going term 1.4.2022-31.3.2024.
BOARD OF THE LANGUAGE CENTRE
As a member of the Board of the Language Centre, you will get to influence matters that concern most students at the University of Helsinki: language studies! The board’s duties include steering and developing the operation of the Language Centre, and current issues are sure to include language teaching after the coronavirus era. This means that the board is an extremely important place to influence matters that are important to students! We are looking for one deputy for term 1 April 2022 – 31 March 2024.
WHAT IS EXPECTED OF STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES?
You must be registered for attendance at the University of Helsinki. No special skills are required – having the desire to learn and the motivation to act as a student representative is of primary importance. Thoroughly reading the meeting material before the meeting, asking for the opinions of – depending on the situation – either your fellow students or subject organisation on the issues on the meeting agenda and speaking up at the meeting itself are quite enough to be successful in the position. You can always turn to the Student Union to receive support and expertise for your work in the University’s administration!
Some of the aforementioned positions for student representatives have certain special criteria or matters considered as advantages. More detailed information on each application target is available on the Halloped website.
HOW DO I APPLY TO BECOME A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE?
Applications should be submitted at beta.halloped.fi by 4 September 2022 23:59.
Your application does not need to be long. In the application, state at least your current major or degree programme and study track as well as your student number (The student number is only used to verify your attendance status. The information will be deleted after it has been verified.) When applying, please also state at least your motivation and readiness to commit to the position, any previous experience of student advocacy work and contacts with other students. You can read the exact criteria for specific application targets in more detail on the Halloped website and then write your application based on that information.
The Student Union hopes to see applications from representatives of different genders and people in different stages of their studies from diverse backgrounds. We assume you to be available for the positions of both an actual member and a vice member. The Student Union strives to consider different disciplines’ representation when making the selections.
