HYY’s Paula Karhunen selected into SYL’s Board for 2020

The General Assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) has selected Paula Karhunen, the candidate of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY), as member of SYL’s Board for 2020.
SYL’s General Assembly, held in Lahti, selected HYY’s Paula Karhunen, 23, as member of SYL’s Board on Saturday 16 November 2019. In 2019, Karhunen has been in charge of educational policy, working life and campus farming on HYY’s Board.
‘A spot on SYL’s Board has been my dream for a long time. It is truly wonderful to be able to continue advocacy work in the field of educational policy, and I am looking forward to next year’s challenges. I am especially awaiting the preparation of the education policy report. The student movement must ensure that the report mentions free education as well as stable and sufficient funding for education’, Student of Social Sciences Karhunen comments right after her selection.
The General Assembly also selected a new chair for SYL on Friday evening: Tapio Hautamäki from Aalto University Student Union. The rest of the Board were selected on Saturday.

SYL represents all of the around 130,000 university students in Finland. Its General Assembly convenes annually in late autumn and is the highest decision-making body of the union. During the weekend, the assembly also decided on issues such as SYL’s budget and action plan, amendments to its policy paper and the General Assembly statement.
