HYY is looking for a secretary general

The Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY) is a corporation subject to public law, with 27,000 university students as members. The Student Union acts as an advocacy and service organisation for its members and for the organisations operating under HYY.

We are looking for a secretary general to join our ranks on a fixed-term contract for the period 1 November 2020–31 December 2023.

Are you already an experienced supervisor and leader of work communities? Are you enthusiastic about advocacy work and public relations? Do you know how to bring the best out of a diverse community of specialists to make everyone want to work for common goals?

HYY’s secretary general supervises the personnel of the Student Union, is in charge of financial management as a whole, deals with the preparation of the Student Union’s decision-making processes as well as both the implementation of its decisions and communication on them, and oversees the Student Union’s operations to ensure that they comply with legislation and regulations. The secretary general is also responsible for the implementation of the Student Union’s Strategy. The secretary general further coordinates HYY’s advocacy work and maintains lobbying relationships to the University and the city as well as in national politics.

We require the applicant to have higher education studies, experience of HR management, problem-solving skills, the ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations, the ability to manage large issues, good interaction skills and skills in financial management. The applicants are requested to show concrete evidence of these required qualities.

We consider experience of leading an organisation, supervisory experience, a higher education degree, the ability to identify competence and education needs in a work community and either evidence of supervising specialist work or vision on the matter as advantages. Familiarity with the student movement or youth organisation activities as well as vision on the role of advocacy work in these fields are especially beneficial in the position.

The secretary general should additionally have excellent command of Finnish and good command of Swedish and English.

The Student Union’s Board will act as the recruitment working group that decides who is invited for interviews in its meeting on 21 September. The interviews will be held on 23 September, and after this, the leading candidates will be invited for an aptitude test on 24–25 September. The secretary general will be selected by the Student Union’s Representative Council in its meeting starting at 5.00 pm on 13 October 2020. The secretary general will start in their position on 1 November 2020 or as agreed, and the contract will end on 31 December 2023.
