We have put together some tips on subsistence below to help you get your studies off to a good start and keep your finances in check.

Student aid

Have you already applied for student aid? If not, do it soon. If you need a student loan, apply for it from the bank, which gets information on the guarantee directly from Kela.

General housing allowance and apartment hunting

Have you already found a new home or are you still looking? If you have already made a rental agreement, apply for general housing allowance soon. Check HYY’s website to find out what you should consider when applying for housing allowance.

If you are still looking for an apartment, check out some tips here.

Work and studying

Keep your payslips from this year. You can earn a limited amount of your own income alongside student aid, and Kela monitors that the income limits are not exceeded. If you get a letter from Kela later, you can check your payslips to see which income you received before starting your studies and which after – Kela does not receive this information automatically.

Study progress

Plan your studies in advance. To receive student aid, you are required to make sufficient study progress, which Kela also monitors. Further information is available on Kela’s and HYY’s websites.

Where can I get further information?

If you need help or have any questions, please contact Kela or HYY’s specialist in charge of subsistence and housing! You can find the contact information here.

Follow HYY on social media or read the current news on our website! We regularly remind you of important issues related to student benefits, so we recommend you to keep an eye on our site.
