Apply to be a candidate for the SYL Board for 2025!

NEWS

What is the National Union of University Students in Finland?

The National Union of University Students in Finland (Suomen ylioppilaskuntien liitto, SYL) is a student organisation representing around 132 000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The main working language of the organisation is Finnish, but native language skills are not required to be successful.

SYL oversees student interests at national and EU level in matters concerning students. The union’s main areas of influence are education policy, social policy and international activities. It also handles student card and student discount issues through its own management and provides advice and training to its member organisations.

Would you like to be HYY’s candidate?

HYY will decide on the nomination of its potential candidates for the SYL Board at the representative council meeting on 12 September 2024.
A working group appointed by the Board, consisting of representatives of the representative groups, will prepare the proposal. The working group invites interested parties to submit a free-form one-page motivation letter and a one-page CV by 11.59 pm on 31 July to hallinto@hyy.fi. You can apply in Finnish, Swedish or English. Applications will be anonymised.
The working group will interview candidates on 13 August (and possibly 14 August) in the evening. The interview will be conducted in Finnish, Swedish or English. The preparation process will follow the memorandum on the governance of national federations, approved by the representative council, which also outlines the procedure for the selection of HYY candidates for the SYL Board. The working group may choose the number of candidates it submits as it sees fit in order to maximise the likelihood of getting HYY’s candidates accepted at the federation meetings.
We require that the candidate
  • be a former or current member of HYY.
  • is motivated to social influence and action.
The applicant will benefit from:
  • We consider it an advantage to have knowledge of the SYL’s field of activity and the student movement, as well as experience in the student union.
  • We value good working relationships with a variety of people and actors, as well as diverse social networks.
  • We consider it an advantage to have experience in lobbying and an understanding of politics.
  • We hope that you will express any aspirations you may have for your role on the board you are applying for and your views on the union’s activities and its development.
  • We value your knowledge of Finnish, Swedish and English.
HYY emphasises diversity and equality in its activities. We welcome applications from as many people with different backgrounds as possible.
