See you at the square!
The Crowning of Manta is one of the most traditional collective May Day ceremonies in Helsinki and all of Finland. It brings together a whopping 80,000 people on the Havis Amanda square and Esplanadi. The crowning ceremony will feature speeches, musical performances and general merriment.
The party culminates at 6 pm when Manta Crew, a volunteer team consisting of students at the University of Helsinki, places a student’s cap on Manta’s head. Once Manta has been crowned, all students will get to put on their own student’s cap.
You can tune into May Day mood in advance with Manta Crew on social media!

Manta <3 the Baltic Sea
This year, the theme of the Crowning of Manta is the Baltic Sea. Did you know that Havis Amanda represents Helsinki rising from the Baltic Sea?
Our home sea is not doing well – it needs help from all of us. The Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted marine regions in the world. Due to its shallowness, it is susceptible to eutrophication and warming. Its low salinity means that the species found in the Baltic Sea are unique.
-
-
You can help the Baltic Sea too!
Everyday acts may feel like a drop in the sea, but that is what it is all about: when enough of us make choices for the Baltic Sea, the overall effect is significant!
Finland has the most litter-strewn coasts out of all Baltic Sea countries. Matters are not helped by the fact that Helsinki has the most litter on its streets around May Day. Please make sure that you recycle your trash and do not litter even while partying. Please do not throw cigarette butts or any other trash in storm-water inlets – they end up directly in the Baltic Sea!
Making sustainable choices in your everyday life is also a way of helping the Baltic Sea! Examples include adding sustainably caught fish and vegetables to your diet, reducing consumption, moving around by foot or bike and avoiding unnecessary chemicals.
