Public Transport

As a student, you need to get from home to the campus, from lectures to your job and from your job to your hobbies – using public transport to travel around the city. This guide has information on public transport in the Helsinki region and on student discounts related to travelling that will make your everyday life a bit easier.

Travelling with HSL

Travelling with HSL

Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) provides public transport in Helsinki and the surrounding area. A single travel card allows you to both get on the bus from your local stop and get a city bike to pedal the rest of the way to the campus.

When you are planning your trip, HSL’s journey planner shows you all available public transport options. HSL’s own app also allows you to easily update your student status and buy single tickets.

Student discounts from VR and Matkahuolto

Student discounts from VR and Matkahuolto

As a student, you are also entitled to a discount on VR’s long-distance and commuter trains as well as Matkahuolto’s buses. To receive the student discounts, you must be able to prove that you are a student. The easiest way to do this is to get a student card with a valid year tag. If you do not have a student card yet, you can get VR’s discount using a separate form. Matkahuolto also has its own student card.

City bikes

City bikes

During the summer, it is easy to get around the city by bike. You can purchase the right to use HSL’s city bikes for a day, a week or the entire cycling season. All three options include an unlimited number of 30-minute bike rides. Remember to take a helmet with you!
