HYY’s Board for 2020 selected, Claes Bergh appointed as chair

NEWS

HYY’s Representative Council has appointed Claes Bergh as the chair of the Board for 2020 as well as 11 other members for the Board.

HYY’s Representative Council had a meeting on 3 December and selected a new board for the Student Union for 2020. In addition to Claes Bergh (from Svenska Nationer och Ämnesföreningar), who was appointed as the chair, 11 other members were selected for the Board.

‘I am very excited and glad that I will get to direct HYY’s Board and operations next year! Together with our amazing board, we will get to continue our long-term work for our community. Next year, we will be working especially on the development of volunteer activities and active advocacy work. In addition to this, the cooperation between the Board and the Representative Council must be developed by reforming our operating methods, for instance. We must also be able to discuss what the purpose of the Student Union actually is – it can include something else than what is mentioned in the Universities Act. We define our future ourselves’, describes Bergh, the newly-appointed chair.

Chair Claes Bergh (SNÄf)

Sami Hasunen (Osakuntalainen edustajistoryhmä)

Taavi Heikkilä (Independent Left)

Lovisa Hirvonen (HYAL)

Jessika Isomeri (HYAL)

Timo Kalliokoski (HYAL)

Okko Karvonen (HYY’s Greens)

Riku-Petteri Kyllönen (Independent Left)

Sammy Nurminen (HELP)

Joonas Pulliainen (Edistykselliset)

Akseli Rouvari (HYY’s Greens)

Sakari Saari (HELP)

Before the selection of the board, the Representative Council groups nominated their own candidates. There were 2 candidates for the position of the chair and 12 for members of the Board. According to HYY’s Constitution, the Representative Council elects the former of the Board, who forms the Board by selecting members for it from among the candidates for the Board.

We have taken notice of the exceptional gender distribution of the new Board. Even though the distribution has always been either equal or had a clear female majority in recent years, we should still investigate whether this year’s situation was purely a coincidence. For this purpose, we have initiated several measures to chart the structures working behind the process of selecting the board. It is absolutely crucial that applying for the Student Union’s Board is considered easy, accessible and meaningful regardless of the applicants’ gender or other background.

The Representative Council’s meeting also decided on the next year’s Programme of Objectives, which will form the basis for planning HYY’s operations in 2020. The focus areas of our operation will be the development of volunteer activities, active advocacy work, sustainable development, preparations for the municipal elections and internal development.
