Come celebrate Independence Day with us in the Students’ Independence Day Torchlight Procession!

Here is how to join!

Arrive on Hietaniemenkatu on 6 December from 4.15 pm onwards and look for a sign with your own organisation’s or student nation’s name along the street. Wait there until you see your flag coming along Hietaniemenkatu and join the procession behind the flag.

In the procession, students will walk behind the flag of their organisation or student nation. Primarily, you would join the procession behind the flag of your subject organisation or student nation, but you can also choose to join it behind your faculty organisation’s flag, for instance. If your organisation is not participating in the event, you can always join either behind your student union’s flag or at the end of the entire procession!

Torches are distributed on Hietaniemenkatu before the procession sets off. However, please remember that there are not enough torches for everyone.

The procession will set off towards the Senate Square at 5 pm. When it reaches the Presidential Palace, the procession will greet the President of the Republic. The event will culminate in speeches from Mayor Jan Vapaavuori and students at the Senate Square. There will also be traditional singalongs!

Put on your student’s cap and weather-appropriate outerwear. We recommend that flag-bearers and heralds wear black clothing, but for everyone else, the dress code is ‘come as you are’!

This year, we students are joining the procession for the holistic wellbeing of students. The event is organised by the student unions of the Capital Region: HYY, AYY, ArtSU, SHS, Kadettitoverikunta, METKA and Helga.

We warmly welcome you all!
