NEWS

Apply to become a student representative on the Academic Appeals Board, Una Europa’s Student Board, the steering group for science education network or the steering group for the digitalisation of teaching! The application period ends at 11.59 pm on 1 June.

The best decisions for students are made by students themselves. If you are interested in developing the University or influencing matters to achieve a better student experience, we recommend that you apply for one of these four open positions! Besides valuable experience with advocacy work and advancing common interests, you will also get credits by working as a student representative!

Academic Appeals Board

Students’ legal protection is the cornerstone of university education. It ensures the fair and equal treatment of students when assessing study performance, for instance. Would you like to get involved in securing and developing students’ rights concretely while also gaining considerable experience of university administration, decision-making processes and influencing important matters at the same time?

According to the University’s regulations, the university has an Academic Appeals Board established by the rector to process rectification requests concerning study performance. The Academic Appeals Board also makes initiatives to develop students’ legal protection and issues statements on issues concerning students’ legal protection. The working language of the Academic Appeals Board is Finnish. Further information on legal protection and the Academic Appeals Board is available on the University’s website.

We are looking for two members for the Academic Appeals Board along with two personal vice members for them for the term 1 August 2023–31 July 2025.

The following are considered as advantages:

  • – Motivation and the ability to commit to the position
  • – Interest in securing students’ rights and ideas for developing them
  • – Experience of acting as a student representative, as a person in charge of study affairs or in some other position related to student advocacy work

Una Europa’s Student Board

Una Europa (una-europa.eu) is a European university alliance bringing together eleven leading research universities with global reputation and reach. Together we aim to shape Europe’s future. Una Europa’s mission is to create a truly European inter-university environment, where outstanding research is continuously linked to transnational learning and innovative, critical thinking.

Una Europa’s Student Board has one student representative and one deputy member from the University of Helsinki. The student representative’s term is 1 August 2023–31 July 2025. The student representatives can be bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral students.

The Student Board systematically monitors Una Europa’s activities and participates in meetings with key stakeholders, such as Una Europa’s Board of Directors. As key stakeholders, the Student Board will give continuous feedback on the quality and relevance of the outputs and milestones delivered by the alliance. Members of the Student Board will get to join biannual physical meetings thanks to a dedicated budget and support for their activities in the framework of Una Europa. An example of a project completed by the Board was the student-driven task force ‘Affordably Abroad’ that investigated solutions to overcoming obstacles in achieving physical mobility for all.

The Student Board elects two co-chairs. The chairs will serve as student representatives in Una Europa’s Project Steering Committee. During the term, there can be both online and live meetings. The University of Helsinki covers the travel costs.

The working language of the Student Board is English, and fluent English is critical in this position. Please write your application in English.

We assume that you are available for the positions of both actual member and vice member. We will strive to consider the representation of different disciplines when making the selections.

The following are considered as advantages:

  • – Motivation and commitment to serve in the position
  • – Demonstrated interest and understanding of international higher education policy
  • – Experience of acting as a student representative or in some other position related to student advocacy work
  • – Previous engagement with Una Europa’s activities, either in the Local Task Force or in any other activities of Una Europa

Steering group for the science education network

Science education and science communication are ways to promote science literacy outside the University. One of the most important aims of science education is to spread the ability to understand science in society, especially in areas where science does not already have a strong status. Science education plays an important role in increasing education in society.

In the steering group for the science education network, you will get to support networking over faculty boundaries, strengthen cooperation between different units and promote the active operation of the science education network. In the group, you will also get to process key plans and other steering documents that are relevant to the network’s operation and finances.

We are looking for one student representative for the group for the term 1 May 2023–31 May 2025.

The following are considered as advantages:

  • – Motivation and the ability to commit to the position
  • – Interest towards science education
  • – Previous experience of acting as a student representative

Steering group for the digitalisation of teaching

Are you interested in developing the digitalisation of teaching? Do you have passion and ideas for improving distance teaching or utilising learning analytics in teaching, for instance? The steering group for the digitalisation of teaching could be the right place for you!

The steering group for the digitalisation of teaching has three primary duties:

1) Acting as a preparatory expert group making prioritisation and decision proposals on the development of teaching conditions at the University level (in cases where their development requires or significantly benefits from digitalisation)

2)Assessing the University’s investment ability (in order to further digitalisation on the terms of teaching, not information systems)

3) Commenting on digitalisation projects that are taking place in faculties and other units and are included in the project monitoring portfolio (as well as on their possible expansion onto the University level)

The steering group also has the duty to ensure that the national-level digitalisation vision is utilised in an appropriate manner at the University.

We are looking for one actual member for the position. Their term will end on 31 December 2024.

The following are considered as advantages:

  • – Motivation and the ability to commit to the position
  • – Interest in and vision for developing the digitalisation of teaching
  • – Previous experience of acting as a student representative

Apply to one or several of these positions by 11.59 pm on 1 June at beta.halloped.fi. We hope to receive applications from students from diverse backgrounds. To apply, you must be registered for attendance at the University of Helsinki.
