Apply to a selection committee and influence matters!

NEWS

We are looking for at least three members for selection committees representing each faculty to prepare the selection of student representatives in autumn 2022. Read more below and apply for the positions!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The main duty of the selection committees is to prepare the selection of student representatives from their own faculty. Selection committees are established for each faculty and will consist of students from that faculty. This is because the students in each faculty will have the best understanding of the kind of skills and vision needed in the steering groups of that faculty’s degree programmes.

The selection committees will be provided with training in a joint training event held on 13 October. The processing of applications and preparing of selection proposals will take place during weeks 44–47, with two meeting times reserved for each selection committee. You can check out the meeting times at the end of this page. In terms of meetings, the job is thus pretty easy! HYY’s Board will confirm the selection proposals drafted by the selection committees. The final appointment of student representatives for the steering groups of degree programmes will be done by the dean of each faculty. The members of the selection committees can agree on the language used in the meetings among themselves.

WHAT DO I GET FROM THE POSITION?

The main duty of the selection committees is to process applications and make selection proposals according to predetermined criteria. In a way, you will thus get to try out what it feels like to act as a recruiter! This will prove useful when you are applying for jobs yourself, while you will also be accumulating important career skills. The position will provide you with good experience of meetings and negotiations, as the members of the committee will discuss the selection proposals among themselves. On the other hand, you will also get to learn about good administration practices, as the process of selecting student representatives is an important statutory duty.

This is a great opportunity to learn about administration and meeting practices as well as make decisions that affect the student community without making a commitment of several years!

WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE POSITION?

There are two requirements for acting in the selection committees: being a student registered for attendance in the faculty your selection committee represents and being able to attend the meetings of the committee according to the schedule below. Please note that you cannot act in the selection committee if you intend to apply to become your faculty’s student representative in one of your faculty’s degree programmes.

The selection committees must have a chair, a vice chair and at least one other member. However, you should not be afraid of the chairs’ positions: the secretary is there to provide constant support and prepare the materials. Either HYY’s selection coordinator or HYY’s specialist in educational policy will serve as the secretary. The chairs’ duties consist mainly of chairing the meetings. This allows all members of the selection committee to focus on the main task: processing the applications and preparing the selection proposals. The selection committees will also be provided with training for their duties, so we absolutely recommend taking this chance to try out serving as a chair in a low-pressure position!

Training for the selection committees is organised starting at 5 pm on 13 October. You can apply for the position even if you cannot attend the training event. The material will be sent to all members of the selection committees, but we strongly recommend that you participate in the actual training event!

HOW DO I APPLY FOR THE SELECTION COMMITTEE?

Applications should be submitted at https://beta.halloped.fi/en by 11.59 pm on Sunday 18 September 2022.

In your application, clearly indicate your current degree programme and study orientation as well as your student number. (The student number is only used to verify your attendance status. The information will be deleted after it has been verified.) In your application, please also let us know whether you are available for the position of chair and/or vice chair. Also inform us if your working language is some other language than Finnish so that we can prepare for this by, for instance, commissioning translations of the applications. The Student Union further considers the following as advantages:

  • Motivation
  • Previous experience as relevant to the position
  • Previous experience as a student representative in administration, as a person in charge of academic affairs or in some other position related to student advocacy work

The Student Union hopes to receive applications from representatives of different genders and people from different stages of their studies from diverse backgrounds. At least three members will be appointed to the selection committee, and we will strive to take into account the representation of different disciplines in the faculty when making the selections.
