HYY157

It is time to polish your dance shoes, iron your best shirt and straighten your sashes: HYY is turning 157 years old! The Anniversary is an evening for our community and friends, and you are very welcome to join us for the celebrations. This year will be all about dance, with a fancy ball full of atmosphere awaiting us!

Would the polonaise perk you up this autumn?

Join us at the Old Student House at 6 pm on Saturday 8 November 2025! The event will feature both academic and somewhat less academic dances. You will also get to test your vocal range in karaoke.

The event is sponsored by UniCafe and UniSport.

The student-owned UniCafe was founded over 70 years ago as the very own restaurant of students, to offer lunch and refreshment amid the fast-paced student life. Today, our 17 restaurants and coffee shops serve people on the campuses of the University of Helsinki – students and researchers as well as passers-by.

UniSport is a sports and wellbeing service organisation jointly owned by Aalto University, Hanken, the University of Helsinki and the University of the Arts. We are the largest organisation producing university sports services in Finland as well as one of the largest providing sports services in general.

Anniversary programme

    • Saturday 8 November @ Old Student House

Doors to the Old Student House open at 5.30 pm.

The anniversary begins with a cocktail event at 6 pm. The cocktail event will include friends of the Student Union presenting their official greetings and the Student Union awarding its official honours, such as badges of merit and honour. The cocktail event is open for everyone but please note that you need to sign up for it separately using a Lyyti form.

The academic ball begins at 8 pm. The ball features traditional dances played at academic parties, such as the picador march, mignon and polonaise.

Organisation heroes 2025 will receive their prizes in front of all the guests at around 9.30 pm.

After the academic ball ends, the evening continues with more informal choreography and party music. Participants will also get to compete in the Anniversary bingo for a unique overall badge!

      The programme:

      • Cocktail event begins at 6.00 pm
        • Sweet melodies provided by YL Male Voice Choir
      • Academic ball begins at 8.00 pm
        • The dances are accompanied by the Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra
      • Organisation heroes receive their prizes at 9.30 pm
      • The more informal part of the ball begins at 10.30 pm
        • Music is provided by party band Illansuu

      Rights to making changes reserved.

    • Dress code

An academic ball is traditionally a formal event for which people dress accordingly. The dress code is thus formal wear with academic medals and honours.

Formal wear hear refers to a tailcoat or a full-length evening dress. However, a dark suit may also be worn instead of a tailcoat. A full dress uniform or national costume also corresponds to a tailcoat or dark suit.

Academic medals and honours refer to various ribbons and academic medals and honours. We recommend checking what kind of instructions the party you are representing or your own organisation have on wearing academic honours in advance.

At HYY’s anniversary, HYY’s members have the right to wear HYY’s member ribbon. You can buy your own member ribbon from HYY’s Services Office .

    • Arriving at the event

The event is organised at the Old Student House (at Mannerheimintie 3, 00100 Helsinki) We recommend arriving at the event by foot, bike or public transport if possible.

The location has good public transport connections from the stops at the Helsinki central railway station, for instance, where you can arrive by commuter train, bus, metro or tram. Read more about the accessibility of public transport on HSL’s website.

The drop-off area is located near the entrance to staircase B of the New Student House (at Mannerheimintie 5 B, 00100 Helsinki). The route from the drop-off area to the accessible entrance of the Old Student House is partially paved with cobblestone.

    • Physical restrictions at the venue

The event is organised at the Old Student House. As an old building, it is only partially accessible.

      • Accessible entrance is located on the side facing Kaivopiha, ‘behind’ the Old Student House. A ramp leads up to the door, but it is steep (over 8%). The entrance features a doubled door, and the threshold is weathered.
      • Depending on the number of people participating in the event, the cloakroom is located either near the main entrance on the first floor or on the second floor, which is not accessible. If needed, the porters at the Old Student House will help you get your clothes to the cloakroom.
      • Two accessible toilets are located to the left of the bar on the first floor. The route to the toilets has a threshold and a small incline with a handrail on both sides.
      • During the event, the programme primarily takes place in the Great Hall on the first floor, which can be accessed accessibly. Some functions may be located on the second floor, which cannot be accessed accessibly.
    • Sensory accessibility at the event

Music played at the event can be loud at times. Depending on the number of participants, the event may have a lot of people and it may be crowded and noisy. The venue may have bright lights, loud noises or strong smells.

The event does not have a separate space you can retreat to, but the lobby and the rest areas on the upper level may be more quiet.
