1 The Flora’s Day programme invites the University community to celebrate the ending of the academic year on 12 May!

The joint springtime celebration of the entire University community – Flora’s Day – is drawing near! Together with the organising parties, consisting of HYY, student organisations and the University of Helsinki, we have come up with diverse and dazzling activities to brighten up everyone’s day!

Our fabulous students have produced amazing glimpses into student life all around the campuses of the University of Helsinki. The nature documentary of the Helsinki Pharmacy Students’ Association dives into the Viikki Arboretum to teach us about the surprisingly diverse selection of species in the area. Students of the Faculty of Science will allow us to take a peek at the rhythm of life of a student from Kumpula in their natural environment, whereas Condus will present the University community with a view of the gorgeous scenery at Siltavuorenpenger. The subject organisations of Meilahti will introduce themselves through stunning TikTok trends! The activities produced by organisations will culminate in a fashion show of overalls where we will get to marvel at the colourful overalls of different faculties.

The Flora’s Day broadcast will be livestreamed on the Think Corner Live platform at 5–7 pm on 12 May. Sign up for the virtual celebration of Flora’s Day here: https://www.lyyti.fi/reg/flora2021/en

2 Sign up for the Opening Carnival on 6 September!

Would your organisation like to participate in this year’s Opening Carnival? Registration is now open! This year, the Opening Carnival is held on Monday 6 September 2021.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have to rethink the arrangements of this year’s Opening Carnival while taking health safety into account. Because of the restrictions on public events possibly in effect in September, we are planning the Opening Carnival as an entirely outdoor event this time.

We will inform everyone of the new arrangements of the Opening Carnival in more detail by August. In any case, we are requesting that you already reserve your stand for the Opening Carnival at this point. The final location of organisations’ stands will not be based on their organisation type. If you would like to have certain types of organisations next to your stand, please let us know of that, too, in the form.

We will strive to offer one (1) table and one (1) chair for as many stands as possible. However, in this exceptional situation, we would be grateful if you happen to have the opportunity of bringing your own tables and chairs as well to ensure that there are enough for everyone who want them. If you have the opportunity of bringing your own tables and chairs, please let us know about it in advance in the form. As we will all be outdoors this year, we would also like to ask you to let us know if your organisation will have a tent in use. Thank you for your understanding and willingness to cooperate in advance – it helps us ensure that we will be able to realise the event.

If your organisation has any specific needs or something noteworthy related to your stand, please let us know in the form. Please note that we will probably be unable to provide electricity for stands located outdoors.

Please sign up your organisation as soon as possible. The deadline for signing up is at 11.59 pm on 15 August. NOTE! You can still edit this form until the deadline through the confirmation message that you receive after signing up.

3 SIGN UP AS A CHECKPOINT HOST IN THE FRESHER ADVENTURE!

The Fresher Adventure is an interdisciplinary dive into the Student Union, its organisations and its close cooperation partners, organised by HYY. Hosting a checkpoint in the event is a fun way to introduce new students to your organisation and its activities! The Fresher Adventure will be organised at 4–8 pm on 23 September 2021.

This autumn, the Fresher Adventure will have to be organised entirely outdoors due to the coronavirus pandemic. This may require checkpoint hosts to rethink their approach, be creative and keep a twinkle in their eye. This year, HYY will decide on the checkpoint locations, but you may make requests on the terrain and location of your checkpoint. Checkpoints can also be realised as remote checkpoints. Check out our requirements for checkpoints here: http://en.fuksiseikkailu.fi/signup. Tips for creating a good checkpoint, on the other hand, are available here: http://en.fuksiseikkailu.fi/goodcheckpoint.

All organisations operating under HYY can sign up to host a checkpoint in the Fresher Adventure!

Deadline for signing up is at 11.59 pm on 15 August 2021

Sign up as a checkpoint host here: https://www.lyyti.fi/reg/fuksiseikkailu2021_rastit/en

4 Grants for innovative learning projects up for grabs – The call for applications has been extended until 13th May!

HYY allocates grants for new study projects organisedby students. The project can, for example, develop study methods, apply theory to practice or advance students’ professional competence. The grant cannot be allocated retroactively.

Feel free to forward the message below to your members or anyone else interested in summer apartments!

7 Take our wellbeing and equality survey!

Is student counselling at the University sufficient? Have you experienced discrimination or inappropriate behaviour?

HYY is conducting a survey on wellbeing and equality among its members. By responding to the survey, you will be producing important data that will help us in our advocacy work at the University and in developing our own operations.

We will be raffling off wireless headphones and an activity tracker among the respondents!

Please respond to the survey by 16 May: https://elomake.helsinki.fi/lomakkeet/111309/lomake.html?rinnakkaislomake=Wellbeingequality

9 Apply for furniture purchasing grant!

HYY supports furniture purchases for interior decoration in organisational premises. The grant is intended for organisations which primarily operate on HYY’s premises and the grant is mainly directed to the purchasing of tables, chairs, cupboards with locks and other interior items. The aim is that the furniture would increase the cosiness of the organisational premises and the willingness of organisations to look after their premises even better.

When allocating the furniture grant, we pay attention to the following: the ecological aspect, sustainability and necessity of the purchase. The furniture grant is not supposed to cover the entire purchase price but organisations are also expected to participate in the financing of the purchase.

The grant can be applied all year round. You can apply for the grant with an informal application, which should include the following information:
– applying organisation/organisations
– applied furniture
– budget
– reasons for the purchase

Applications can be submitted by e-mail to jarjesto(at)hyy.fi or by mail to the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, PL 1099, 00101 HELSINKI. Organisations that receive the grant must provide copies of the receipts to the same address no later than within four months after the allocation of the grant.
