Opening Carnival opens the academic year on 2 September!
Opening Carnival will be opening the academic year of the University of Helsinki and the Student Union! The Carnival is organised on the City Centre campus at 2–6 pm on 2 September 2019.
Come and learn about organisational activities, meet your Student Union and the University’s actors, add to your overall badge collection and take in the music, good atmosphere and diverse supplementary programme at the Main Building, Porthania, Think Corner and in front of the buildings on Fabianinkatu and Yliopistonkatu.

The new Tiedekulma has been up and running already for two years, so we are throwing a birthday party.

Besides performances you can enjoy our game corner with Virtual Reality Fruit Ninja or all time favourite Nintendo 64 at the Fönster.
We also have traditional board games for those who prefer old school games!
Between the performances we will play our special birthday playlist where anyone can suggest their favourite songs.
And yes, there is more! At the Basement you can learn about our new Tomato thursday and win Think Corner´s overall badge!
Programme in the street area:
14 – 18 At HYY’s stand in front of Porthania, you can meet your Student Union and grab yourself a new HYY overall badge or tote bag, for instance!
14 – 18 At the committees’ booth on Fabianinkatu, you will get to dive into the world of HYY’s volunteer activities! Make your own biodegradable bag at the Environmental Committee’s ‘zero waste’ point, put your speed to the test in the Events Committee’s speed game or participate in the Community Development Committee’s Carnival Bingo and grab yourself a gorgeous overall badge!
14 – 18 Prologi’s bikeshop on Yliopistonkatu, you can fix your bicycle and learn about the activities of HYY’s fastest organisation!
14:15 – 17 The Student Organisations Committee’s street sitsit. At the legendary street sitsit of the Student Organisations Committee, you will get a taste of dinner party culture on Fabianinkatu! Don’t know what a sitsit is? Come and find out!
15.30 The corner of Yliopistonkatu and Fabianinkatu will host a true classic of the Opening Carnival: a budo show organised by HYY’s martial arts organisations and Unisport from 3.30 pm onwards. Aikido, daitoryu, judo, karate, taekwon-do, taido ja kashima shinryu. This year, the Student Fencers are also taking part.
Food:
15 – 17 Free ice cream. This year the University is serving students free ice cream at Unicafe Porthania from 3pm to 5pm!
