1 Reservation rounds for Alina Hall for autumn 2022 postponed

Construction work on a new lift is taking place in the New Student House this year, which leads to major demolition and construction work in the premises in the summer and autumn. As a consequence, we are postponing the allocation of reservations to Alina Hall. We will monitor the progress of the construction work and inform you of the reservation rounds once we have more certainty over the date on which the premises will again be available for organisational use.

The construction of the lift does not affect reservations to Alina Hall that have already been allocated for spring 2022.

2 Help us clean up Ullanlinnanmäki!

This coming May Day, we will once again get to organise a traditional celebration of students and student life at Ullanlinnanmäki. As taking care of the environment and the cleanliness of the area is important, we are now looking for volunteer organisations to clean up the Ullanlinnanmäki area after the May Day celebrations, on the morning of Monday 2 May approx. from 7am to 2pm.

We will provide a small payment for the work. If your organisation is interested in the cleaning job, please contact Member of HYY’s Board Emilia Junnila by email at emilia.junnila@hyy.fi by 10 am Wednesday 6 April. If two organisations make the same bid, the organisation who made the bid first will win. The organisation with the best bid will be contacted on Friday 8 April.

Let’s enjoy a clean May Day – nature will thank us!

5 Save the date: Equality training in Swedish on Apr 4

Equality and inclusion are themes that affect student communities and associations in many ways. AYY and HYY are organizing an equality training in Swedish, with an emphasis on harassment contact person activities, on Mon 4th April at 17-19.  The training will be held on Design Factory’s Stage (Betonimiehenkuja 5C, 02150 Espoo).

The themes for the training are:

  • Norms and power structures: what are the root causes of marginalization, bullying and harassment? What power structures maintain the norms?
  • Intersectionality: how do different intersecting personal attributes and belonging to different segments of society and minority groups affect the experience of marginalization, bullying and harassment?
  • Building, maintaining, and developing a safer space: events, online platforms, and social media channels
  • Diversity and equality planning: practical examples. How to get started and how to update the plan
  • Practical rules and of engagement and instructions in situations where marginalization, bullying and harassment occur: “code of conduct”

Registration form will be sent to this e-mail list later.

If you have any questions, please message us at jarjestoasiat@ayy.fi. Looking forward to seeing you in the training!

6 Welcome to the evening sessions on HYY’s action plan on anti-ableism and antiracism

Have you ever wondered what HYY does to prevent racism and ableism?

Are you interested in promoting equality at the University?

You now have the chance to influence the promotion of equality in HYY as we are drafting an action plan on anti-ableism and antiracism this year. Anti-ableism refers to opposition to discrimination based on disability, whereas antiracism means active opposition to racism.

Based on the discussion, we will come up with various solutions to foster inclusion.

8 Help the Finnish Red Cross as a box collector

Has your organisation wondered how you could participate in helping people suffering from the war in Ukraine? The Finnish Red Cross is accepting volunteers to help as box collectors. Organisations can form a volunteer group consisting of their members, and the Red Cross will provide them with equipment for the day. The profits are used for the Red Cross’s disaster relief work in, for instance, Ukraine.

The Red Cross would like to be informed of any volunteers and their number at least one day in advance. The equipment can be picked up 8.30 am–4 pm on working days, and the person picking it up will need to have their ID with them. The Helsinki and Uusimaa district of the Finnish Red Cross is located in Autotalo (at Salomonkatu 17 B, 5th floor), opposite the Kamppi metro station.

For further information and reservations, please contact the contact person for the Helsinki and Uusimaa district (ari.hakala@redcross.fi)

9 Apply for furniture purchasing grant!

HYY supports furniture purchases for interior decoration in organizational premises. The grant is intended for the purchase of furniture for HYY’s organizational premises and the grant is mainly directed to the purchasing of tables, chairs, cupboards with locks and other interior items. When allocating the furniture grant, we pay attention to the following: the ecological aspect, sustainability and necessity of the purchase. The furniture grant is not supposed to cover the entire purchase price but organizations are also expected to participate in the financing of the purchase.

The grant can be applied all year round. You can apply for the grant with an informal application, which should include the following information:

– applying organization/organizations

– applied furniture

– budget

– reasons for the purchase
