HYY’s Akseli Rouvari selected into SYL’s Board for 2021

The General Assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland has, on Friday evening, 13 November, selected Akseli Rouvari, the candidate of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY), as member of SYL’s Board for 2021.
Akseli Rouvari, 24, has been selected as member of SYL’s Board in the General Assembly held remotely on 13 November. In 2020, Rouvari has been in charge of educational policy, communications and environmental and climate affairs on HYY’s Board. Rouvari is a student of social sciences.
‘I am excited and deeply grateful for the trust that the General Assembly has shown in me! Work for students and for a better society and world goes on. SYL’s centenary year is an especially great time to be involved in working for a better student movement and responding to the challenges created by the acute coronavirus crisis. The quality of education, the climate crisis, visions for the future and developing the impact of our movement are all themes I am looking forward to working with. We should dare to be more and to act boldly to change this world’, the excited Rouvari describes his thoughts right after his selection.
On Thursday 12 November, the General Assembly also selected SYL’s new chair, Annika Nevanpää from the Student Union of Tampere University. The six-member Board was appointed on Friday.

SYL represents all the around 130,000 university students in Finland, looking after students’ interests at the national level. 2021 is SYL’s centenary year.
SYL’s General Assembly convenes annually and is the highest decision-making body of the union. The assembly held on 12–13 November decided not only on the selection of individuals but also on issues such as SYL’s budget and action plan, amendments to its policy paper and the General Assembly statement.
