HYY awarded prizes to the best teachers of 2024

Every year, we award the Good Instructor, Magister Bonus and Best International Teacher prizes to distinguished teachers and instructors at the University of Helsinki.
HYY awarded its annual prizes to good teachers and instructors once again at HYY’s 156th Anniversary on 28 November 2024. The recipients of the awards were selected based on proposals submitted by students and organisations. We wish to thank everyone for the large number of proposals we received again this year!
The Magister Bonus prize is awarded to a teacher teaching in Finnish or Swedish, the Best International Teacher prize to a teacher teaching in English and the Good Instructor prize to a member of the University staff providing students with instruction.
Magister Bonus prize
Jonna Kangas, senior university lecturer
Faculty of Educational Sciences
Jonna Kangas is known for her inspiring teaching. She always treats students with respect and encouragement. She incorporates research into students’ everyday life and enables them to become integrated into the academic community. She has received particular praise for her way to deal with blended learning. Kangas brings out the best in students.
Best International Teacher prize
Rose Thorogood, Associate Professor
Helsinki Institute of Life Science
Rose Thorogood has an especially positive and encouraging approach to teaching. Her lectures are described as extremely interesting. She is also known for her creative teaching methods and interactive approach. Thorogood is kind and uses humour expertly to lighten the mood during teaching.
Good Instructor prize
Anna Ripatti, university lecturer
Faculty of Arts
Anna Ripatti was praised for her listening skills as she supports and instructs students. She treats students as individuals and is always ready to help. Ripatti helps students gain a clearer vision of their study paths.
