Was your freshman year the best time of your life? Is your greatest desire to show new students how fun the student community can be? Do you like to be seen and heard? Do you like to encourage others? Are you known as the specialist of funny stories? Do you like to participate in student events, regardless of the whether? Do you dare to speak Finnish, Swedish and English?
If you answered yes to some of these questions, please apply for the position of HYY's Freshman Chancellor for the year of 2014. The Student Union of the University of Helsinki is looking for a volunteer to welcome new students to the student community of the University of Helsinki. The Freshman Chancellor's duties include representing the Student Union in events aimed at new students during the orientation studies in August-September, promoting a general welcoming atmosphere throughout the University, as well as encouraging the freshmen and tutors and being present in parties during the freshman autumn.
The Freshman Chancellor does not have to know everything about the university or HYY, but to make new students to feel welcome in the student community. It is essential to be able to identify with the feeling that you do not know anything about anything. The Freshman Chancellor does not work alone but as part of HYY's Committee for Tutor Affairs and in cooperation with tutors. The Freshman Chancellor is also supported by HYY's staff and the Board. There are no previous freshman chancellors, so you can create the position rather freely. No financial compensation is paid for the duty. The position of the Freshman Chancellor starts from tutor training sessions in May and ends in freshman parties in October. The volunteer position does not take very much time, the busiest time is in September when you should work 1-3 afternoons a week. The Freshman Chancellor has a holiday in June-July.
Are you interested? Please send an informal application addressed to the Committee for Tutor Affairs to Board Member Matleena Kosonen (email@example.com) by 12noon on May Day Eve, 30 Apr. The application should include at least the applicant's name, year of study, major subject and contact details. Applicants must have registered for attendance at the University of Helsinki. Some of the applicants will be invited for an interview in early May and the elected applicant will be published on Flower Day on 13 May 2014.
