At its anniversary on 26 Nov, the Student Union of the University of Helsinki awarded Assistant Professor of Criminal Law Sakari Melander with Good Teacher – Magister Bonus prize. HYY annually awards the prize at its anniversary. All university students may nominate candidates for the prize. HYY Board decides on the application criteria and the recipient of the prize.
Melander's prize was based on the fact that he is at the same time both an approachable and credible teacher and researcher, whose lectures focus on essential issues, which he explains in a way that the students understand. Melander's student-minded approach, professionalism and transparent development of teaching make him a particularly good teacher. Melander has a very open attitude to providing feedback, which has made the students to participate more actively in the development of teaching at the faculty.
This year, HYY awards the Magister Bonus prize for the eighteenth time. ”Students want a teacher to whom the development of teaching is important. The Magister Bonus prize is not awarded based on titles or research breakthroughs, but to a teacher who promotes the students' learning and is willing to put himself on the line to improve the quality of education”, says HYY Board Member Johanna Riitakorpi.
