At its festive meeting, the Board of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY) has awarded several honours for the work done to benefit the Student Union. The honours will be awarded at HYY's 145th anniversary at the Old Student House in the evening of 26 November.
This year, the badge of the presiding officers on a wide purple ribbon for significant and meritorious work done for the benefit of the University of Helsinki and its students is awarded to Chancellor Emeritus, Rector Emeritus Ilkka Niiniluoto. This person, also known as the official philosopher of the nation, has been able to combine scientific and administrative career in an admirable way. He is also a very experienced organisation activist, who has always maintained contact with the everyday reality of the student life. That is why he deserves the Student Union's highest honour.
The Student Union's badge of honour on a wide blue ribbon is annually awarded to a person or persons who have significantly promoted the Student Union's aspirations and to whom the Student Union wishes to pay homage. The badge of honour on a wide blue ribbon is awarded to Chancellor of the University of Helsinki Thomas Wilhemsson, University Chaplain Leena Huovinen and Professor of Biology Ilkka Hanski for significant and meritorious work done for the benefit of the academic community.
In accordance with Section 4 of the Student Union's badge regulation, the Student Union's standard may be granted at the discretion of the Student Union to a community which has promoted the Student Union's aspirations.
The Student Union's standard is awarded to the Committee of 100 in Finland for long-term and significant work for the benefit of humanity.
The badge of honour on a narrow blue ribbon for significant and meritorious activities for the benefit of the Student Union is awarded to Master of Social Sciences, Student of Arts Aura Kostiainen, Master of Arts Juha Kuokkala, Master of Theology Lauri Laine, Master of Arts Antti Miettunen-Nordström, Student of Theology Leena Pihlajamäki, Student of Arts, Master of Arts Ville Sinnemäki, Master of Arts Katariina Styrman, First Officer Ilmo Teikari, Bachelor of Arts Matti Tujula and Student of Arts Juha Töyrylä.
The badge for long-term and meritorious work for the benefit of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki is awarded to Tuomas Seppä, Riitta Sundström, Minna Tammi, Paula Andersson and Pirjo Koivu. The badge is awarded for 20 years of service in the Student Union of the HYY Group.
The Good Teacher – Magister Bonus prize 2013 is awarded to Social Science History Lecturer and Adjunct Professor in Economic and Social History Hanna Kuusi. The awarding of Kuusi was based on the fact that she is genuinely interested not only in her own field, but also in teaching. As a teacher, Ms Kuusi uses a variety of pedagogical approaches and emphasises student-centered deep learning. In her teaching, she links her own field to a wider social framework and takes into account the students' different career plans. The students who nominated Ms Kuusi, praised her as an encouraging, warm and communicative teacher. According to students, Ms Kuusi aims at getting to know her students also outside the lecture hall and is present in the events of subject organisations, among other things. She also constantly develops her courses based on the feedback received from students.
The Student Union of the University of Helsinki is the oldest and largest student union in Finland. Approximately 28,000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students of the University of Helsinki are members of the Student Union.
