HYY awarded Kirsti Lonka with Magister Bonus prize


The Student Union of the University of Helsinki rewarded Professor of Educational Psychology and Vice Dean Kirsti Lonka with Good Teacher – Magister Bonus prize at its anniversary on 26 Nov 2012. HYY annually grants the prize at its annual celebration. HYY's Board decides on the application criteria and the recipient of the prize.

Lonka's rewarding was based on the fact that she is very distinguished in her work and has developed learning through World Design Capital project, for example. Due to her work, the Department of Behavioural Sciences has received a new innovate learning environment Minervan tori.

Lonka is an active advocate for participatory learning. She has distinguished herself both as a lecturer at the introductory course and as the instructor of the Master's theses and doctoral students. Her work shows genuine enthusiasm and interest in teaching. Lonka has also written very popular textbooks both for university students and upper secondary school students. The best example of this is Tutkiva oppiminen book.

According to those who proposed the prize for Lonka, she is very student-centered and helps students to foster as the members of the scientific community. As Vice Dean, Lonka is in charge of social interaction and she has also included students in this work. This year, Lonka was also awarded as the communicator of the year.

Like in previous years, the prize jury was gathered to elect the winner. Participants from the Committee for Academic Affairs and all faculty organisations were asked to join the jury. This year, the jury members included Pirre Seppänen, Jenna Tirkkonen, Anna Heino, Lotta Kuusisto, Mika Sirelius and Kaisa Heiskanen, Olli-Pekka Tikkanen, Harri Mäcklin and Suvi Pulkkinen.
