The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY) has appointed law student Aaro Riitakorpi as the new Secretary General of the Student Union. He will begin his three-year term in November with an induction period.
Riitakorpi, 29, studies law in the University of Helsinki. He has extensive experience of a variety of positions of trust both in student unions and in the administration of the University of Helsinki. In HYY, Riitakorpi has been Member of the Board in 2011, and served in the Board of HYY Group during 2012–2015- He was Secretary General of the Student Union of the Sibelius Academy in 2012–13, and Chair of the Federation of Green Youth and Students for the year 2014.
Riitakorpi will move to the position of Secretary General from his current job since August 2016 as HYY’s Specialist in higher-education policy.
The Secretary General is the operative manager of HYY: she is responsible for the activities and finances of the student union and works as the supervisor of HYY’s staff of approximately 10 persons. The Secretary General also runs organizational development in HYY and manages both general interest representation and relations to stakeholders.
The Student Union of the University of Helsinki was founded in 1868 and it is the oldest and largest student union in Finland. It has approximately 27 000 undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Helsinki as members.
